(Royal Dutch Philips Electronics Ltd..), Usually known as Philips, is one of the largest consumer electronics manufacturers in the world. In 2004, sales were approximately € 30.3 million and they employ 161,586 people in more than 60 countries. Philips is organized in a number of divisions: Philips Consumer Electronics, Philips Semiconductors, Philips Lighting, Philips Medical Systems and Philips Domestic Appliances and Personal Care.
The company was founded in 1891 by two brothers Gerard and Anton Philips (1874-1951) in Eindhoven, The Netherlands. His first product was a light bulb ‘and other electronic devices’. His first factory is now a museum. In the 1920s, the company began producing other products, and in 1939 its first electric razors, Philishave, was introduced. Philips shaving tools marketed in the U.S. with the Norelco name. Philips introduced the compact audio cassette tape, a wildly successful, through their trials set the standard for VCRs, V2000, failed in the face of competition from the Betamax and especially VHS standard.
On May 9, 1940, the director of Philips notified of the invasion of Germany to the Netherlands on May 10. They decided to leave his country and fled to the United States. They receive a lot of companies with capital. Operating from the U.S., they take care to run the company throughout the war. At the same time, the company itself moved to the Netherlands Antilles to keep it out of German hands. After the war returned to the Netherlands, with headquarters in Eindhoven (and in 1997 the decision was made to move to Amsterdam – transfer was completed in 2001). Many secret research facilities are locked and successfully hidden from attackers, which allows companies to run fast again after the war. Also believed that Philips – before and during the war – to supply a lot of electrical equipment to the armed occupation of Germany, which makes some people think that the company had collaborated with the Nazis, like many other companies at that time.
However, no facts that support that Philips itself or its management had agreed with the Nazis or their respective ideologies. Clearly, there is little Philips could have done to prevent the Germans from the misuse of its production facilities and forcing their workers to do hard labor during the occupation. Production facility in Eindhoven was the only goal the Dutch who intentionally bombed allied forces during the war.
